Incoming Freshman Parents: Mark your calendars for this year's Tornado Drill. It's scheduled for August 7th, 2025 from 8:30AM-12:30PM.

A big Tornado welcome the new Principal at Taylorville Junior High School.
It is with a great amount of excitement that I reintroduce myself to the Taylorville community. My name is Stile Smith and I am the new building principal at Taylorville Junior High School.
I originally hail from Centralia, IL, where I found a love of both basketball and literature. I took that love of literature and obtained my bachelor’s degree in English education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
I was then lucky enough to integrate myself into the Taylorville community when I received a teaching position at Taylorville High School in 2012 teaching high school English. I spent 11 years teaching at the high school while also coaching basketball for 10 years, softball for three years, and serving as the student council advisor for three years.
While teaching, I pursued my master’s in educational leadership from the University of Illinois - Springfield. I made the jump into administration in Pana in 2023 as their district athletic director and junior high assistant principal.
A few months after moving to Taylorville in 2012, I met my wife, Whitney. We were married in 2014 and have four children; Hayva, 9; Sawyer, 6; Adalyn, 4; and Hollyn, 8 months. While I am not a Taylorville native, this community has become my home. I love this town and I want Taylorville Junior High School to be a school that students, teachers, parents, and community members are proud of. I am incredibly honored to serve as the TJHS principal and work with an outstanding staff while helping to guide wonderful students.

We are pleased to give a big Tornado welcome to our new North School Principal.
My name is Ben Cunningham. I have recently been hired as the new principal of North Elementary School.
I was born, raised, and educated in Clio, Michigan. After graduating from high school, I decided to pursue a career in elementary education. I received my undergraduate degree from Greenville University and met my wife, Amanda, there as well. My first years of teaching were at the elementary school in Greenville. I taught fifth grade, and while teaching, obtained my master’s degree in educational administration from Eastern Illinois University. After having two sons, Mitchell and Jackson, with a third child on the way, a daughter, Kate, I decided to work closer to home. I took a job as a fourth grade teacher in Hillsboro, the town that we live in. I continued my teaching career by moving to the Junior High School in Hillsboro to try my hand at teaching sixth grade social studies and coaching volleyball.
The last two years I have felt a strong desire to have a larger impact on education as a whole. I longed to be able to work with teachers and share my love of education and kids with others. I was humbled and honored to be chosen to lead North Elementary School here in Taylorville, where I have the opportunity to do just that! I have heard incredible things about the Taylorville school district, its community, and the incredible staff that work at North! I hope to be able to add to the outstanding atmosphere already present there, while supporting the staff and students as we all work together to take on the very important task of educating children. Thank you for the opportunity to serve in this way!

Back to school is right around the corner. If you are looking to get a physical scheduled, here are some options. Please make sure to read the flyers carefully for the details.

Our teachers had the opportunity to learn some new instructional techniques. Kristi McCullough is modeling a Smekens reading lesson for the 2nd grade teachers in Mrs. Cope’s class. They are learning to use text features to identify what tricky words mean. #teachersasstudents

Our kindergarteners are making the last week of school extra special with a fantastic Disney Day celebration! There were so many adorable characters and happy faces. It's truly been a year to remember with these amazing kids!
