Memorial School would like to give a big Thank you to the Staff at Kroger for the generous donation of school supplies!
Today, 5th graders from Ms. McChristy and Ms. Laker's classes joined the 2nd graders from Mrs. Cope's and Mrs. Vickers' classes at North for a special reading activity. We call them '5th Grade Buddies,' and they teamed up to share stories and foster a love of reading across grade levels. It was a wonderful opportunity for older students to mentor their younger peers while building strong connections through literacy.

Mrs. May's and Mrs. Leonard's foods classes made fruit pizzas to work on their baking and knife skills in the kitchen.

Mrs. Reindl spent Friday in Mrs. McLean's 7th grade Geography classes teaching students to use CANVA to create travel brochures of a National Park. Students have to include the 5 themes. They learned how to add images, change text, use image AI generator, and Magic Write.
RISE students had a wonderful field trip at the zoo!

Mrs. Reindl went into all the 5th grade classes this week and taught the students about their digital footprint. She read "The Technology Tail" by Julia Cook to the classes. Then students designed their own tail. They used band -aides to cover any bruises or scratches (bad things posted online), stickers (good or helpful things they have done online), and holes (not so smart things they have shared online). It was a great learning activity.
Mrs. Salmon's 6th grade science class has been learning about the solar system. Mrs. Reindl - brought in sphero's teaching the students how to code them. Students then coded the sphero's to rotate around the sun. More advanced coders went on to add color and sound.

Stonington Police officers Travis Peden and Phil Deal came to the THS Rise classroom this afternoon to bring treats and let the kids see the inside of the police car. The students loved the sirens and sitting in the police car.

On Friday, Mr. Starks' geography class was taught how to use the design tool Canva by Mrs. Reindl. Students are now working on creating a travel brochure about a state or national park of their choice. They need to incorporate the 5 key geographic themes into their brochure:
1. Location
2. Place
3. Human-Environment Interaction
4. Movement
5. Regions
Students were also taught how to use AI writing tools to help develop descriptive text for each of the 5 themes.

Last week, all the 5th grade classes in our school received their first digital citizenship lesson from Mrs. Reindl. Here's what the students learned: The students discussed what it means to be a "digital citizen". They learned that as we use more and more technology and go online, we all have certain responsibilities to be good, ethical, and safe digital citizens. The class talked about the difference between right and wrong when it comes to online behavior. They discussed things like being kind to others, protecting your personal information, and using technology appropriately. The students worked together to go through different online scenarios. They had to decide what the right thing to do would be in each situation, and why. This helped them practice making good choices when using technology. Overall, the digital citizenship lesson gave the 5th graders a great foundation for being responsible and safe as they continue using computers, phones, and the internet more and more. It's an important lesson that will help them become better digital citizens.
